Wait til you've got a decent amount of time to read Sophie's World. It's brilliant but definitely requires full attention! And the bits on philosophy will take you a couple of read throughs to really get. But it's worth it!

Ah. You probably shouldn't get me started on Jodi Picoult but I'll try not to go too worked up haha. For starters let me say, it's not that I think she's a terrible writers per se, merely that she is overrated. She is praised as a brilliant literary writer and I disagree with that. I think she has the potential to be a much better writer than she is, but frankly I think she sells out in order to have ner novels publishes so quickly.

I know everyone LOVES My Sister's Keeper but I think it was a total sellout. It was a well written and interesting exploration of human emotions and the choices we make in our lives - but she completely undermined that by ending it the way she did. That frustrated me to no end.

The Tenth Circle could have been a decent book except that to me it felt like she didn't know how to end the book so just gave up. It was incredibly abrupt but didn't at all feel like it was a deliberate device. There no real resolution, and again, it didn't feel like it was a deliberate choice to not resolve things but that she simply didn't know how. I think the biggest problem is that her success has caused her to give in to the pressure of her publisher's to release her books too soon and that compromises their quality.

Ahem. I'll get off my soapbox now.

i definitely will :)
the tenth circle never really grabbed me, and i didn't read it all properly.
well i asked this because we were thinking of doing a jodi picoult book for november, most likely my sister's keeper or the pact. but i guess it would be interesting to discuss both sides of it, so would you mind if we did one of them, and would you be happy to discuss why you didn't like it?

That would be totally fine by me. Someone always has to be the antagonist haha!
